This is survivor's bias operating at the individual level. You're essentially running a personal highlight reel and calling it your career stats. The result is a wildly distorted picture of your actual performance.

That distortion gets worse in high-variance games. If you play enough hands, you'll have stretches where things break your way regardless of how you're actually playing. A lucky month can cement a false belief in your own ability that takes years — and a lot of money — to unlearn.

Why "I Run Bad" Is Almost Always Incomplete

One of the most common phrases in any gaming community is some version of "I've just been running bad lately." And sure, variance is real. Downswings happen to everyone, including the best players in the world. But variance is also one of the most convenient excuses ever invented, because it's genuinely true often enough to make it believable even when it's not the whole story.

The honest question isn't "am I running bad?" It's "how would I know the difference between running bad and playing bad?" Most players can't answer that because they've never built a system to find out.

Getting Real Feedback: Tools That Don't Lie

So how do you actually calibrate your self-image against reality? Here are a few methods that work.

Separate results from decisions. This one takes discipline. After every session, ask yourself: were the decisions I made correct given the information I had at the time? A correct decision that leads to a bad outcome is still a correct decision. A bad decision that accidentally works out is still a bad decision. Evaluating your process independently of your results is how serious players actually learn.

Seek outside perspectives — and mean it. Most players who say they want feedback actually want validation. If you're posting a hand history in a forum and getting frustrated when people point out your mistakes, you're not actually seeking feedback. Find someone whose skill level you respect and ask them to be genuinely critical. This is uncomfortable. It's also one of the fastest ways to close the gap between who you think you are and who you actually are.

Compare yourself to a benchmark, not a memory. Instead of asking "am I better than I used to be?" ask "how do my stats compare to a baseline for winning players at this level?" In poker, that might mean comparing your win rate per hundred hands to documented averages. In sports betting, it means calculating your actual ROI against the vig. Numbers don't have feelings. They'll tell you the truth even when you don't want to hear it.

The Dangerous Middle: Where Most Players Get Stuck

Here's something counterintuitive: the players most vulnerable to the skill gap illusion aren't total beginners. Beginners often know they're beginners. The most dangerous zone is intermediate — players who've learned enough to beat weaker competition, developed genuine skills in some areas, and accumulated enough wins to feel justified in their confidence.

These players have real ability mixed with real blind spots, and the wins make it hard to see the blind spots clearly. They've graduated past the "I know nothing" phase but haven't yet reached the "I know how much I don't know" phase. That middle zone is where overconfidence does the most damage, because the stakes are usually higher and the competition is usually tougher.

Confidence Is a Tool, Not a Trophy

None of this means you should walk into every game convinced you're terrible. Confidence has genuine performance value — hesitation and self-doubt are costly in competitive environments. The goal isn't to demolish your confidence, it's to make sure your confidence is accurate.

Justified confidence, built on real data and honest self-assessment, is one of the most powerful assets a player can have. Delusional confidence is just expensive cosplay.

The players who consistently perform at the highest levels — the ones who keep climbing regardless of short-term variance — are almost always the ones who've developed a ruthless honesty about their own game. They don't need to believe they're the best in the room. They just need to know exactly where they stand, which edges they have, and where the work still needs to happen.

That clarity? That's the real competitive advantage. And it starts with being willing to look in the mirror and see what's actually there.
